"Through community volunteerism, young people can gain experiences that build leadership skills-- the ability to realize a vision, engage and develop others, and make things happen."

Thomas A. Page

Completion of community service is encouraged of all Mt. Lebanon High School students. Participating in the works of our school and greater community fosters values and citizenship, and provides our students with meaningful work, greater responsibility, and an enhanced sense of self. To serve one’s school and greater community is a privilege that should be approached with seriousness of purpose, good intentions, and gratitude.

Although community service is not a requirement for graduation, demonstration of commitment and investment in one’s community is highly valued by colleges and universities. It is also required for students interested in applying to the Mt. Lebanon High School chapter of National Honor Society during their junior or senior year.

Deadlines for 2023-2024

9th grade:  10 hours of community service must be completed and submitted by June 7, 2024

10th  grade: 10 hours of community service must be completed and submitted by June 7, 2024

11th grade and 12th grade NHS applicants:  10 hours of community service must be completed and submitted by March 1, 2024

12 grade current NHS members:  10 hours of community service must be completed and submitted by May 24, 2024

A good rule of thumb for community service hours...

Not all "nice acts" count as service hours for organizations like NHS or competitive scholarships. For example, it's very nice to mow your grandmother's lawn, but that's not necessarily service to your community.

Ask yourself - would I report this service specifically on a college application?

If the answer is yes, submit it on PowerSchool.

If the answer is no, give yourself a pat on the back and look for other opportunities to serve the community.

Please note that an approval for service to be listed on PowerSchool is not a guarantee to be approved on the NHS application.    See the specific NHS site for information on approved service.

Check out the listings below for more service opportunities that are definitely approved for NHS!

Changes to Community Service, effective June 2022

No more in-school/out-of-school requirements.

By eliminating this past requirement, we hope students will engage in whatever service is most fulfilling to them and is in most need of their talents, gifts, and interests. We also hope this opens up opportunities for students to invest their time with specific projects, opportunities, and organizations that they want to serve.

As in the past, the A.O. will continue to post service opportunities from both MTLSD and the greater community as they are available. If you’re not sure what kind of service you might be interested in pursuing, stop by the A.O. and we will be happy to help you find a good fit!

Community service hours will be submitted online only.

Paper forms will no longer be used or accepted for submitting service hours. Please see details above on how to submit and track your hours in Power School. As always, contact the A.O. staff if you have any issues with the form or questions about submitting hours.
